International Coffee Day: The Stories Behind Every Cup

Nawal Al Shaalan

Coffee has a way of becoming part of the moments we look forward to. It’s the first cup before a busy morning, the invitation to sit with a friend, or the familiar welcome when you visit family. International Coffee Day gives us a reason to enjoy those moments and get curious about the many hands, places, and traditions behind our favorite drink.

When Is International Coffee Day and Why Do We Celebrate It?

International Coffee Day falls on October 1 each year. The International Coffee Organization chose the date as a shared celebration for coffee lovers around the world. It is also an opportunity to recognize the farmers and other workers whose efforts bring coffee from the farm to our cups.

There’s a personal side to the day, too. Coffee can mean a few peaceful minutes alone, but it can just as easily bring people to the same table. The way we prepare and share it often comes from habits passed through families and communities.

National Coffee Day Vs International Coffee Day

You may also have heard of National Coffee Day, observed on September 29 in the United States. While that date is often associated with café specials, International Coffee Day on October 1 is a global occasion that celebrates coffee and the people who produce it.
You don’t need a special plan for either day. You might make your usual cup and take the time to enjoy it, or invite someone you haven’t seen in a while to join you. Sometimes the best coffee is the one you have time to share.

Part of coffee’s appeal is how many ways there are to enjoy it. Some people love a small, strong cup; others prefer something creamy or chilled. If you’re curious to try a different style, these familiar favorites are a good place to start:

    • Espresso: A small, concentrated coffee with a rich flavor. It is also the starting point for many other drinks.
    • Cappuccino: An Italian favorite made with espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.
    • Cold brew: Coffee steeped slowly in cold water for a smooth, refreshing drink.
    • Turkish coffee: Finely ground coffee prepared in a cezve and served with the grounds still in the cup.
    • Arabic coffee, or gahwa: Often flavored with cardamom and served in small cups, it holds a special place in traditions of hospitality across the Gulf.

    7 Fun Facts About Coffee

There’s plenty to discover beyond what’s in your cup. Here are a few facts and stories to bring up at your next coffee catch-up:

    1. Coffee has a famous origin legend. According to an Ethiopian story, a goat herder noticed his goats becoming lively after eating coffee cherries. It’s a legend, rather than a documented account of coffee’s discovery.
    2. Finland has a strong coffee culture. Finns drink more coffee per person than people in any other country, according to Visit Finland.
    3. Coffee beans are seeds. They grow inside the fruit of the coffee plant, commonly called a coffee cherry.
    4. A coffee cherry usually holds two seeds. Those seeds are what become the beans we roast and brew.
    5. A coffee pot helped inspire the first webcam. Researchers at the University of Cambridge set up a camera so they could check whether their shared pot still had coffee before walking over to it.
    6. Decaf is not always caffeine-free. An eight-ounce cup typically contains a small amount of caffeine.
    7. The first official International Coffee Day was celebrated in 2015. The International Coffee Organization’s members had agreed on October 1 as the common date the year before.

What Is Served with Coffee Around the World?

What comes alongside a cup of coffee can tell you as much about a place as the coffee itself. Some pairings are part of welcoming a guest; others turn a short break into time spent together. Here are four traditions that bring a little more to the table:

        • Arabic coffee with dates: Across the Gulf, guests are often welcomed with coffee (gahwa) and dates. Serving them together is a familiar expression of hospitality.
        • Turkish coffee with lokum and water: In Türkiye, a small glass of water and a piece of lokum, or Turkish delight, traditionally accompany the coffee. The water is often enjoyed first, before the rich coffee and sweet treat.
        • Italian coffee with a pastry: Coffee and a brioche are a familiar breakfast order in Italian cafés. The drink might be an espresso, cappuccino, or another local favorite.
        • Swedish coffee with a cinnamon bun: In Sweden, fika is a break for coffee, something sweet, and often good company. A kanelbulle, or cinnamon bun, is one of its classic companions.

Celebrate the Moments Shared Over Coffee

The next cup you have may be a quick one before work or one that lasts through a long conversation. Both are worth enjoying. This International Coffee Day, think of the people who helped bring it to your table and the people you’d like to invite to join you there. Sometimes a simple “Come over for coffee” is all a memorable afternoon needs.
